Willem Bosch
Dr. Willem Bosch born in Amsterdam on April 26, 1798, died in Arnhem on May 19, 1874.
Bosch made extraordinary contributions to the development of medicine in the Dutch East Indies. On his proposal, the Dokter-djawa-School was established in 1851, with P. Bleeker as the first director. This school would later develop into STOVIA (School for the Training of Native Physicians) and eventually become the Medical School in Batavia in 1928.
Among Bosch’s notable works are the still valuable "On the Indian Thrush (Aphthae orientales)" (Amsterdam, 1837) and "De dysenteria tropica, along with a brief investigation into the question : Does man have the physical capacity to leave his native land and live in any climate? Refuted by mortality statistics in the East Indies" (The Hague, 1844).
Bosch participated in the following military operations: the Palembang expedition in 1821, the Java War of 1827-29, and the West Sumatra War from 1831 to June 1835. He was awarded the octagonal bronze medal for the Java War of 1825-30.
